Brick Fields Development
VICTORY FOR THE AONB
The Planning Inspector has refused MS Oakes’ appeal to build 43 homes in our AONB. She found there were no exceptional circumstances allowing such a major development at the old Brickfields site in the AONB.
This represents a real success for the Aldeburgh Town Council which was represented on the appeal with support from the Aldeburgh Society and members and residents who kindly helped fund the costs.
It is also of course a real victory for the AONB and Aldeburgh and will set an important precedent.
Thank you all for your support and contributions.

The Planning Inquiry sat for six days in the Community Centre from 11 September to 19 September to hear MS Oakes Ltd’s appeal against the refusal of planning permission for the proposed development for 43 new homes in the clay pit at the old Brickworks off Saxmundham Road. The Aldeburgh Town Council, supported by the Aldeburgh Society, were represented by planning consultant Neil Ward and leading counsel. Society members and other local residents were out in force to hear the arguments put by all sides and Suffolk Coastal District Council put up a strong case in defence of its decision to refuse planning permission.
The site is in the heart of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and other acknowledged environmental sensitivities; it contains a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) next to a designated Ramsar area.
This proposed development, which would be visible from the river, borders the former Reades Brickworks and could set a dangerous precedent for other potential building sites in and around this coastal town.
Following a highly successful public campaign to raise funds, The Aldeburgh Society was able to help fund the Aldeburgh Town Council’s representation at the Public Inquiry. Thanks to all who so generously made donations.
A decision is expected before Christmas.

BACKGROUND
There is proposed development by MS Oakes Ltd for 43 new homes in the clay pit at the old Brickworks off Saxmundham Road. The planning application was refused by the District Council and is now going to appeal and Public Inquiry.
The site is in the heart of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and other acknowledged environmental sensitivities; it contains a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) next to a designated Ramsar area. (The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands is of international importance, especially as Waterfowl Habitat is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands.)
This proposed development, which would be visible from the river, borders the former Reades Brickworks and could set a dangerous precedent for other potential building sites in and around this coastal town.
The Aldeburgh Society, Aldeburgh Town Council and a group of residents have pledged funds to fight this contentious housing development at the Public Inquiry, scheduled to begin at the Community Centre in Aldeburgh on 11th September 2018, expected to last for approximately six days. The submitted appeal is a highly complex document and to counter the arguments we need expert input, in the form of planning consultants and legal representatives. A JustGiving page is being launched to help fund legal representation at this Inquiry. Your donation, no matter how small is vital.
The JustGiving page is accessible online via www.campaign.aldeburghsociety.org.uk If you can, please support it. Smaller amounts can be donated by texting 'AONB01' followed by the amount (e.g. £10) to 70070. You can also help enormously by encouraging friends, neighbours and all residents to support this vital campaign.
