What's happening

enhancing the town environment and facilities

14/4/2025

The Aldeburgh Society Committee has, over recent months, discussed ways to make Aldeburgh as liveable and welcoming a town as possible for residents and visitors of all ages and all levels of mobility. The projects listed below are among several we have discussed (and indeed some were recommended in the Town Plan in 2015). We believe these projects would be of real benefit to the town and its environs.

None these projects are within the scope of the authority nor responsibility of ATC. They would require a partnership approach to make any progress. So, whilst we do not expect ATC to take a lead we would hope for active engagement/encouragement with the Aldeburgh Society in taking these projects forward, not least because we would be harnessing local expertise for the good of the community. All the projects would need substantial funding.

The county council are crucial to Projects 1-3 because it is the Highways authority which has policies for creating safe cycle routes.  We also intend to pursue with the County Council the urgent need to re-surface the end of the A1094 from Fort Green to the Yacht Club (we believe this work is now imminent).

1. Complete the safe walking and cycle route to Thorpeness – including disability access.
2. Create a safe cycle route to Snape and Saxmundham.
3. Create a safe cycle route to Aldringham and Leiston.
4. Renovate the fishing boats on the beach and establish a sustainable future for the boats.
5. Create boardwalks along the beach with spurs to the Scallop and to a viewpoint opposite the Moot Hall, to enable access for mobility scooters and pushchair.

The committee of your society would be delighted if members would give us feedback on their support for these various projects. Please complete the survey below by clicking on the button below,

These proposals are given added urgency by the potential impact of SZC and the other possible energy projects which might help in funding. We shall target our efforts at the new councils which will emerge from the coming reorganisation of local government.
